A good setting can almost be a character, and has enormous influence over the atmosphere, tone and richness of a story. Sometimes the plot dictates the setting, but not always.

Sometimes the setting can inspire a plot – a glimpse of a house in the woods, a glamorous cityscape, an untamed wilderness, a deserted beach – just the sight of somewhere can spark off a story.
